Finding the right counselor means finding someone whose life experience and perspective you can relate to. Here's a little more about me to help you decide.
I finished my counseling education at the University of North Texas in 2012, and my counseling internship at CitySquare in 2014, a non-profit providing food, health, and housing outreach. I managed the social service team helping residents maintain their housing, many of whom had experienced homelessness, poverty, and trauma, and I learned to implement counseling interventions for severe mental illness and addiction.
Before pursuing my graduate degree in counseling, I worked in community health for many years. I helped run a program called Project Access Dallas and we helped uninsured residents of Dallas County connect to volunteer physicians, charitable clinics, and medical services. This experience building a program, nurturing community relationships, and thinking creatively about hard-to-solve problems is the origin for my passion today. I learned from seasoned leaders what is possible when people come together for the common good.
My counseling approach follows the work of Alfred Adler and Carl Rogers. Rogers' approach is called person-centered, meaning I do my best to understand your concerns from your point of view. I often use Adler's idea that all human behavior is purposeful, and that we are always striving toward goals. The way we strive toward our goals is heavily influenced by our early childhood experiences and family of origin, so we may talk about your past and your imagined future.
I have received post-graduate training in the following treatment modalities:
