By Danielle A Slee, LPC ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy) is a fairly new evidence-based approach to trauma informed care that a lot of people haven’t heard about. Not to be confused with Art Therapy, ART is more similar to therapy methods like EDMR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). One of the biggest complaints with EMDR is that a client can feel emotionally flooded due to dealing with multiple traumas at the same time; Laney Rosenzweig, the creator of ART, wanted to find a way to help clients with this problem. In ART, the client will focus on one trauma or distressing memory to process through during a session. The ART eye movements engage the Parasympathetic nervous system, helping clients become calm and can make changes to the limbic system. ART utilizes eye movements shown by the research to be connected to a relaxation response in the brain. Clients that find their trauma hard to talk about can really benefit from this method, as it is not required to engage in talk therapy for the client to feel relief from their trauma; ART focuses on images and sensations one feels when they think about their distressing memories.
